The history of the house of Gucci begins in Rome Italy in 1921. That is when a local designer and leather craftsman by the name Guccio Gucci began to design and sell his own creations through local retail establishments around the city center. That went on for a little over a decade, until 1938 when he finally opened his first boutique to market his design creations, which had been spiraling in popularity and demand in the local community.

The turning point for Gucci’s fortunes came in 1947, when the house of Gucci designed and released a unique handbag that featured a never before seen handle made from bamboo. The bag was a hit and his company had to shift into high gear to keep up with an ever growing demand that still exists to this day. As the years clicked by, more stores were opened around the globe and after the senior Gucci passed away in the early fifties, his sons took over the business.

The company, with his sons in control saw some years of strife duting the 50s as they struggled with each other for leverage and influence. In the early sixties Gucci began to open stores in overseas Asian cities such as Tokyo and Hong Kong, which have proven since then to be quite succesful. However; there were some regretable moves along the way, such as forming a partnership with American Motors Corp. in the 1970s. This alliance led to the Gucci name and design work gracing the interiors of the “Hornet” and the “Gremlin”, two of the biggest lemons to ever roll the streets of the U.S.
